Under six hours and fewer than twenty openings. That is how long the inner screen of one iPhone Duo lasted for an owner in Melbourne, and most of that time the phone was busy restoring data from iCloud, so it had barely been used (VietNamNet ). The owner unfolded it to show a friend, felt something give near the fold, and heard a crack. The display split right along the hinge (404 Media ). A couple of days later the r/iPhoneDuo forum had a megathread called “Crackgate,” and the cracks in other people’s photos shared one feature: they ran through the same spot (9to5Mac ).
That coincidence is the story. A screen broken in a fall cracks wherever it lands. When screens belonging to different people split at the same point, the suspect is no longer clumsy hands but a part inside the case pressing there again and again. iFixit seems to have found such a part, although it has not proved it.
The first week of the first folding iPhone
Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. It was the first big launch for the company’s new chief, John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook at the start of September and is a mechanical engineer by training (OPB ). The phone folds like a passport, with a 5.4-inch outer screen, a 7.6-inch inner one and a starting price of $1,999 (TechCrunch ). It went on sale on October 23.
By the weekend the complaints were piling up, and they followed a pattern. First a crack down the center of the hinge, then a strip of stuck white pixels across the whole screen. Some displays reportedly cracked within hours of unboxing, and a couple broke during first-time setup. The 9to5Mac writer counted about ten unique cases, against what he estimated as “hundreds of thousands, if not millions” of units already shipped.
Apple responded on October 26. The company said it was aware of “an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units” and that affected owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement (9to5Mac ). How small that number is, it did not say.
Melbourne wears black
The first thing commenters did was accuse the Melbourne owner of faking it. They spotted an extra finger, called the screen too glossy for a matte coating, and found the people in the background suspiciously dressed in black.
They had reasons. As early as September 10, the day after the launch, an image of an iPhone Duo supposedly creased after three months of use spread on X. Fact-checkers at Lead Stories ran it through a detector, which rated it 99.9% likely to be machine-made, and a reverse image search led back to Apple’s own launch photos, which showed no damage. The most-shared crack posts also recycled each other’s pictures: the same photo of a cracked phone in an Apple Store in China turned up in at least four of them (Gulf News ).
The Melbourne owner explained that the white streak was dead pixels, not glare, and that the blacked-out patch hid a photo of their child. Locals defended the black. In Melbourne, everyone dresses like that (VietNamNet ). The moderators received extra photos and repair paperwork from the owner and marked the post as verified.
The replacement went more smoothly than the comments, though not on the first try. Phone support offered an express replacement, but with a hold for the phone’s full price on the owner’s card and no delivery date. The owner declined. At the store, a technician looked the phone over, suggested a manufacturing defect and handed over a new one in a plain brown service box, the last unit in the right color and size. There was no charge, and the broken phone was to be shipped to California for analysis.
How to fold a screen in half
To see why a crack keeps finding the same place, take a stack of paper and bend it. At the fold the outer sheets travel farther than the inner ones, and the edges of the stack slide into a staircase. Glue the sheets together and the stack will tear instead of bending.
Apple itself describes the Duo’s screen as a book: beneath a protective coating and a matte layer sits high-strength glass, then the folding panel, then more glass, with adhesives that let the layers glide “like the pages of a book” (Apple ). Glass only works in a stack like this if it is extremely thin: the flexible glass in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip is 30 micrometers thick, thinner than a hair (Android Police ). The whole stack rests on a titanium plate, with the hinge beneath it. So what matters most is what holds the screen up from below.

The hinge works like a metal watchband and contains more than a hundred parts (MacRumors ). Its links, with springs and gears, fold the screen not into a sharp angle but into a gentle loop inside a teardrop-shaped cavity. The 2020 Motorola Razr used this approach, and in iFixit’s 3D model the Duo’s screen stays gently curved inside the hinge even when the phone is fully closed (iFixit ). And one link of this watchband has a job it cannot afford to be late for.
The suspect in the middle
That link is the central support, a bar in the middle of the hinge. The open screen rests on it so it does not sink under a finger. When the phone closes, the bar is supposed to drop and make room for the loop.
iFixit’s engineers built a 3D model of the hinge from CT scans, teardown footage and Apple’s patents. In their simulation, if the support does not drop far enough, the folding screen comes down right onto it. That creates a stress hotspot. The white strip has an explanation too: a fault in the tiny electrical connections at one point can light up a whole row or column of pixels, so the damage itself is probably smaller than the streak it leaves. The white lines intersect just below where the display cable passes through the center of the hinge, and that is the crack’s address.
iFixit calls this a hypothesis. Nothing more. Its first suspect was the accordion cable between the two halves, but the symptoms point elsewhere. The damage sits where several edges meet and change how the thin display is supported as it bends. The central pivot also looks different from the rest of the hinge, and iFixit asks whether it might be getting stuck. 9to5Mac floats something similar, suggesting that in part of a batch one component may sit slightly out of line and push on the screen from below. On social media people wonder whether owners press the middle of the screen when closing the phone, but Apple has given no guidance either way.
If the support theory holds, it is easy to see how the reviews missed the problem. CNET ran its phone through 55,000 folds on a machine custom-built for the Duo, and journalist Joanna Stern found that after 32,000 folds hers felt “pretty much the same” (404 Media ). A test that flexes a healthy unit will not find a batch defect.
The irony is that the same teardown gave the Duo a 5 out of 10 for repairability, the best score iFixit has given any foldable. Its biggest deductions came from exactly the inner display and the hinge, which take a lot of labor to replace. So the most repairable foldable is most expensive to fix precisely where it breaks: $999. The score is still provisional while iFixit waits for replacement parts.
Samsung has been here before
The first Galaxy Fold broke before it even went on sale in 2019, and the plot looked familiar: the first days, the first hands on it, the fold (Wikipedia ).
// Timeline
- Journalists report broken screens on Galaxy Fold review units. The Verge’s reviewer sees the screen fail after about a day.
- Samsung delays sales planned for April 26 and recalls the review units.
- iFixit’s teardown finds gaps at the fold that let debris get under the screen.
- The phone ships with caps at the hinge, an extended protective layer and extra metal plates under the screen.
- The iPhone Duo goes on sale.
- Apple acknowledges an inner display issue on a small number of units.
Some of the 2019 failures were caused by reviewers themselves, who peeled off a protective layer they took for a shipping film. Duo screens are cracking for people who simply opened their phones, and Apple acknowledged the problem three days after sales began. Back then Samsung needed four and a half months to ship a fixed phone.
The number that isn’t there
Foldables make up about 2% of the global smartphone market (Droid Life ), and Apple promised it had cracked the code (TechCrunch ). Samsung rates the Galaxy Z Fold8 for 500,000 folds, while Apple publishes no rating for the Duo (MacRumors ). On its website the company describes a “wonderfully flat and smooth inner display” (Apple ). How reliable the central support is will become clear from the teardown of the broken phones Apple is shipping to California, and from the batches that follow. For now the only precise reliability figure for the Duo comes from Melbourne, and it is fewer than twenty openings in the first six hours.
